VoT winners’ interviews: Sofia Radrizzani

Sofia Radrizzani was part of the venture capital track and was kind enough to share her experience in this interview. We hope you enjoy reading and learning from it as much as we did!
Journey and Motivation
1. What inspired you to join the Voices of Tomorrow competition, and why did you choose your track (consulting, entrepreneurship, or venture capital)? I was drawn to the Voices of Tomorrow competition because it offered a unique opportunity to explore the intersection of science and entrepreneurship, an area I find very interesting and want to learn more about. I chose the Venture Capital track
because I am eager to understand how early-stage biotech innovations are evaluated and supported. While I am motivated by the idea of contributing to the biotech ecosystem, particularly by identifying and fostering innovative ideas, I saw VoT as achance to gain hands-on experience and deepen my understanding of VC. Additionally, I was excited to work alongside like-minded individuals who share a
passion for advancing impactful solutions in biotech.
2. How did the competition’s masterclasses, webinars, and mentors shape your
approach?
The programme was split into two sections: masterclasses by experts in VC, and a team project to evaluate a start-up for investment with the help of a mentor. The masterclasses were invaluable, particularly those where speakers shared their personal experiences. One example was the session led by Imche Veiga, which felt more like a conversation where she shared specific insights about the key players in the startup ecosystem that she had collected throughout her professional experience. These sessions gave me a clearer understanding of the realities of pursuing a career in VC.
Our team’s mentor, Nelli Morgulchik, also had a profound impact. Beyond guiding us through the start-up evaluation process, she offered personal insights that enriched our understanding of the industry. Her availability and support helped us successfully navigate challenges and deliver our best work.
Teamwork and Problem-Solving
3. How did your team collaborate and navigate challenges during the competition?
Our team worked well together, benefiting from strong skill complementarity and a shared commitment to performing at a high level. One significant challenge arose early on when one of our team members left. Although redistributing tasks among the
remaining four members required some adjustment, it ultimately strengthened our
collaboration. Having team members who were fully committed made it easier to maintain high-quality output.
We also faced smaller challenges during the start-up evaluation process, particularly in validating the start-up’s technology and its market need. To address this, we conducted a survey for quantitative insights and interviewed Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) for qualitative depth. While these steps gave us an edge, they required strong time management and persistence, especially when seeking transparency from experts in the industry.
4. Can you share a specific moment where mentorship or teamwork made a
significant impact on your project?
Our mentor, Nelli, played a crucial role in guiding our efforts. One standout moment was when she helped us refine our investment thesis. Her advice ensured we focused on high-impact areas of the start-up’s potential, which significantly shaped our
strategy.
Additionally, our team dynamics were essential when we had to quickly adapt after losing a member. We redistributed our responsibilities and leveraged each other’s strengths to ensure we delivered a strong final pitch.
Track-Specific Insights
5. Venture Capital Track: What was your approach to evaluating startups and making
investment decisions?
Our evaluation process began with defining an investment thesis to guide our analysis. We then conducted a comprehensive review of the start-up’s technology, assessing its stage of development and potential impact. Simultaneously, we carried out an in-depth market analysis, considering factors such as market size, competition, and use case validation. Evaluating the market landscape was critical, as we identified key competitors, understood their offerings, and compared their business models and financial statuses to those of the start-up we were assigned to evaluate. Finally, we examined significant market deals, acquisitions, and exits, including in regions aligned with the start-up’s aspirations. This research enabled us to make an informed recommendation about the start-up’s investment potential.
Professional Background and Growth
6. What elements of your academic or professional background helped you excel in
the competition?
My scientific background provided me with the ability to critically evaluate the validity and potential of the start-up’s technology. This, combined with my capacity to synthesise complex information and communicate it clearly, allowed me to contribute effectively to the project. Additionally, holding an analytical mindset and deep curiosity for biotech enabled us to assess the start-up’s technology in the broader context of competing solutions in the market, identifying both opportunities and challenges.
7. Which skills gained through VoT do you consider most valuable for your future
endeavors?
The VoT competition significantly enhanced several key skills. Coming from a scientific background, I wanted to broaden my understanding of market assessment, and I gained valuable knowledge about market sizing, start-up evaluation, and investment decision-making through the expertise of my team members and mentor. The collaborative nature of the project further strengthened my teamwork skills, particularly in aligning diverse perspectives toward a common goal. Moreover, navigating challenges such as conducting expert interviews and adapting to the loss of a team member further improved my resilience and adaptability, both abilities necessary for a career in VC.
8. How has participating in this competition influenced your career aspirations or
long-term goals?
Participating in the VoT competition has strengthened my ambition to pursue a career at the intersection of biotech and innovation, including exploring opportunities in Life Sciences VC. It provided invaluable hands-on experience in evaluating early-stage innovations and deepened my commitment to ensuring that groundbreaking science translates into impactful advancements in healthcare.
Future Aspirations and Leadership
9. Where do you see yourself in five years, and how has this experience shaped
your vision for your role in biotech or healthcare?
In five years, I see myself contributing to the growth of innovative biotech solutions, perhaps as an integral member of a Life Sciences VC firm identifying and supporting transformative biotech ventures. The VoT competition provided valuable insights into start-up evaluation and the broader VC ecosystem, shaping my understanding of the role I want to play in advancing biotech innovation.
10. Do you plan to stay engaged with the GBR network or support future VoT
participants?
Absolutely. One key highlight for me was to meet a lot of the incredible people amongst the participants and speakers, and I intend to remain connected with the GBR network.
Reflections and Advice
11. What was the most memorable or transformative moment of the competition?
One standout moment was our final pitch. Our team had worked very hard to gather insights and refine our presentation, so we definitely enjoyed showcasing the knowledge we had built by delivering the pitch and answering the judges’ questions.
When the organisers announced that we had won the VC Track competition, the recognition felt immensely rewarding. Another highlight was meeting incredible people: participants, speakers, and our mentor Nelli. These connections made the experience even more enriching.
12. What advice would you give to future participants to make the most of this
opportunity?
Engage deeply with the masterclasses and mentorship, as they provide invaluable insights and guidance. Moreover, focus on building strong team dynamics early, as a dedicated team is critical to success. Finally, aim to explore innovative ideas and seek out expert feedback to refine your approach.
