GBR Spotlight – Ioannis Prattis
GBR Spotlight is a series where we highlight some of our team members so you (and we) can get to know them a little better. For our second installment we recruited the big boss, the man himself, our very own president Ioannis! Read here what he loves about his role at GBR and what book he would recommend to everyone.
Hi Ioannis, thank you for taking the time to answer a few questions for us! For starters, could you introduce yourself to us a little?
I was born and raised in Greece, but I have lived in UK for more than a decade. My studies have been pretty diverse. I have a Master’s in Molecular Genetics and soon I will be submitting my PhD research thesis in Electrical Engineering, where I have used my biological background to solve bioengineering challenges. I believe that combining different areas of knowledge is key to approaching problems from all angles and finding the best solutions.
I would describe myself as someone who always prioritizes care and compassion in my interactions with others. I believe that being empathetic and understanding goes a long way in bringing out the best in a team. I’m also naturally curious, which allows me to see challenges from different angles and come up with innovative solutions. And at the end of the day, I find the most joy in not just directing people, but also rolling up my sleeves and getting to work alongside my team.
Speaking of directing people, how and why did you get involved with GBR?
Working for GBR presents a valuable opportunity to be a part of a student-led, non-profit organization with a major impact in the biotech and healthcare fields.
Being part of a non-profit organization provides a sense of fulfillment, knowing that I’m making a meaningful contribution to something bigger than myself. And each day, I have the opportunity to collaborate with top-notch team members and network with leading professionals in academia and industry, continuously expanding my knowledge in these cutting-edge fields.
We certainly enjoy being called ‘top-notch’! With all your work for GBR and your regular job, is there still time for hobbies?
I love hitting the pavement for a run and playing some seriously competitive board games with friends. Running helps me blow off steam and keeps me feeling good, while my favourite games bring me closer to my friends!
What is the last book you read, and would you recommend it?
The last book I read was “Emotional Intelligence 2.0” by Travis Bradberry and I absolutely loved it! I found the self-assessment tools and real-world examples to be incredibly helpful in improving my ability to understand and manage my emotions and relationships. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for practical strategies to better understand themselves and others.
Which three items would you take with you on a lonely island?
If I were stuck on a deserted island, I would bring a blender, a party hat, and an inflatable palm tree. I’d make Mojitos, dance under the palm tree, and live like it’s my own personal beach party. It’s good to be stranded with style.
Sounds fantastic! I will make sure to get stranded on the same island as you then!
Thank you so much Ioannis for answering these questions for us!
