Mrs Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw

Mrs Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw is an Indian entrepreneur and the chairperson and managing director of Biocon Ltd, a biotechnology company based in Bangalore, India, as well as the chairperson of the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore. In 2014, she was awarded the Othmer Gold Medal for outstanding contributions to the progress of science and chemistry. She is on the Financial Times’ top 50 women in business list. In 2015, she was listed as the 85thmost powerful woman in the world by Forbes. Forbes again listed her in 2016 and 2017 as the most powerful woman in the world at 77thand 71stposition, respectively.

Mrs Mazumdar-Shaw studied biology and zoology at the Mount Carmel College in Bangalore, later graduating from Bangalore University with a bachelor’s degree in Zoology. Inspired by her father’s job, she went to Federation University in Australia to study malting and brewing, where she was the only woman on the course and earned her master’s as top of the class. She worked as a trainee brewer, technical consultant and technical manager at different corporations after graduating. She joined Biocon Biochemicals Ltd in Ireland and returned to India, where she faced credibility and technological challenges while establishing an Indian subsidiary for the company. However, she successfully overcame them and Biocon India was the first Indian company to manufacture enzymes and export them to the US and Europe. She then worked during the next years to expand the industrial enzymes manufacturing company to a fully integrated bio-pharmaceutical company with a well-balanced business portfolio of products and a research focus on diabetes, oncology and auto-immune diseases.

As of today, Biocon has filed more than 950 patents as a result of its research activity, is Asia’s largest insulin producer and has the largest perfusion-based antibody production facilities.
